Catalyst Modeling Challenges for Electrified Powertrains

To meet the upcoming CO2 reduction challenges, further electrification of vehicle powertrains is indispensable. In combination with post-Euro 6 requirements for criteria pollutants, exhaust system expected to be more complex allow extremely low emissions under all driving conditions, potentially involving technologies such as electrical heating and phase-change materials. The longer ‘zero-flow’ operation in hybrid applications associated light-out risk have demanding accuracy heat loss calculations require additional thermal management strategies. This paper discusses challenges posed regard catalyst modeling boundary conditions electrified vehicles necessary improvements that go beyond state-of-the-art techniques. Most are linked advanced 3D components accounting free convection radiative transfer. Modeling electrically assisted demonstrated using a new approach combined electrical–thermal solver. Heat retention use materials also accounted these new-generation models. Finally, need tighter integration high-fidelity models into simulation framework discussed.
